Dans la mégapole d’une superpuissance mondiale, Winston Smith vit, cadenassé dans sa solitude, sous le regard constant du télécran. Employé au ministère de la Vérité, il réécrit quotidiennement les archives de presse pour les rendre conforme avec la ligne officielle du moment. Mais un jour, le petit employé de bureau se rebelle, commence un journal, tombe amoureux et flâne dans les quartiers où vivent les proles, soustraits à la discipline du Parti. Dans ces lieux où subsistent quelques fragments du passé aboli, il va s’engager dans la rébellion…
« Novlangue », « police de la pensée », « Big Brother »… Soixante-dix ans après la publication du roman de George Orwell, les concepts clés de 1984 sont devenus des références essentielles pour comprendre les ressorts totalitaires des sociétés contemporaines. Dans un monde où la télésurveillance s’est généralisée, où la numérisation a donné un élan sans précédent au pouvoir des grandes entreprises et à l’arbitraire des États, où le passé tend à se dissoudre dans l’éternel présent de l’actualité médiatique, le chef-d’œuvre d’Orwell est à redécouvrir dans une nouvelle traduction et une édition critique.
Parue pour la première fois au Québec en 2019 aux éditions de la rue Dorion (Québec), cette nouvelle version corrige les lacunes de la traduction initiale réimprimée à l’identique depuis 1950 (une quarantaine de phrases manquantes, de nombreux contresens) ; et, au contraire de la traduction « moderne » parue en 2018, restitue la dimension philosophique et la fulgurance politique du roman d’Orwell dans les termes que des millions de lecteurs se sont appropriés depuis plus d’un demi-siècle ; tout en rendant hommage à la dimension poétique de cette œuvre pleine d’humour, d’amertume et de nostalgie.
I am not that smart of a person to write a meaningful critique of this book, but if you're interested in one, Isaac Asimov wrote one in 1983 on the eve of the forthcoming year, critiquing Orwell's writing, history, politics, and its role as science fiction.
Absolutely excellent book, a must read for everyone in my opinion. It does get a little dry at certain parts, but picks right back up. It is entirely worth pushing through.
The book expresses an insanely scary, yet completely plausible future of the world, or more likely certain places. Some places around the world share many similar core values with the world of 1984, which furthermore helps strengthen the fearful possibility. 1984 is a great fusion of non-fiction, history, futurism, and fiction in a dystopian world ruled by people who quite literally want nothing more than power, pure, unadulterated power. They will do anything to get it, and do anything to keep it. This is all done in a fictional world, but sometimes it really feels like you're reading non-fiction, due to how completely possible the world created is. They will do anything to get it, and do anything to keep it. This is all done in a fictional world, but sometimes it really feels like you're reading non-fiction, due to how completely possible the world created is. Many values shown in the book, you hear and see about everyday in many aspects, especially politically. Some places in the world share similar structure and values to that of the powerful system in 1984. It strikes fear in the reader due to the relate-ability, and possibilities presented within the world of 1984. Furthermore, despite this book being written in 1949, and feels even more relevant now than ever before.
The contributions of this book are far too grand for me to go into all details here. To make it short, I believe that Orwell provided a fitting explanation of how individual thought is suppressed under totalitarian regimes. The principles of doublethink are also used in democratic states whenever it is politically necessary to hold two conflicting opinions. I even claim that it is a politician's most essential skill to perform this mental gymnastics convincingly.
However, this propaganda does not necesarrily manage to convince everybody. Regardless of the political system, it seems that generally, the people under its influence tend to root for it. But also regardless of the system, the capacity for subversive ideas can never be eliminated. Whether this capacity is actually of any use, though, depends on the system. There are a few things that I find riveting in 1984:
- The idea that information control can shape reality. I first read 1984 in college, before algorithms played such a huge role in our lives. Today the notion that influencing information access can shape a populations' perception of the world, encourage opinion, shape our behaviors is all too real.
- The sense of hopelessness is absolute. I've never felt so mournful finishing a book. At the end, the world of individual liberty and hope has just completed fading from view. As Winston capitulates, the state continues its inexorable march to consuming the whole of the human experience, subverting romantic relationships, subverting the relationship between children and parents, even purging language of unorthodox concepts.
I probably shouldn't read books like this on the road. What a downer.
