I read only nonfiction for years. Now, I'm getting back into fiction. (he/him)

Jenny Lawson: Furiously Happy (2015, Flatiron Books) 4 žvaigždutės

Read it for the cover

4 žvaigždutės

This is the best book cover ever. What made the book, was that she mentioned the cover. What made it even better is that the cover picture is of a real taxidermied racoon (minus the sparkles)!

It's all in the book.

Matt Haig: Midnight Library (2020, Penguin Publishing Group) 4 žvaigždutės

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an …

No regrets

4 žvaigždutės

You should have no regrets about life after this one. Affirming yet tough and true.

A bit of a warning, if you've ever been depressed, this book can make you touch very difficult feelings. But it's worth the struggle.

An excellent finish

4 žvaigždutės

I'm sure there's more stories that could be told in the Owens' universe, but this one seems as a great end to four wonderful books.

An magical exploration of beauty and love

5 žvaigždutės

With a dash of obsession thrown in.

This book must've came to me at the right time and place because I fell in love with it. It's probably just a hex put on me by the author. I'm okay with that.

Laurie Frankel: One Two Three (Hardcover, 2021, Henry Holt and Co.) 4 žvaigždutės

Everyone knows everyone in the tiny town of Bourne, but the Mitchell triplets are especially …

So fun of a book

4 žvaigždutės

The form of the book is a chapter from each of a set of triplets, one after the other, then repeat; hence 1,2,3. It's not only a different premise, it's handled very well. The three sisters have different life situations and personalities, so you get to see a few sides of some situations. But it doesn't drag; the plot moves through the siblings smoothly.

And 'Number Two' is hilarious.

Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None (1991, Berkley Books) 3 žvaigždutės

Perhaps the greatest mystery novel of all time. AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is Agatha …

My first Agatha and mystery

4 žvaigždutės

I've never read any mysteries, so I thought I'd start with the best. Some reviews said this one was it. Of course, I'd heard of Christie.

I expected a great mystery, which this is. But I did not expect how great of a writer she was! The book bounces between the thoughts of 10 people right from the beginning. The repetition of their thoughts only helps to establish the setting. The rest of the book continues this way, bouncing between characters, revealing their fear and guilt. Each character different, yet in the same position. Artfully done.

Exhaustive, as in fully comprehensive

4 žvaigždutės

The book starts out slow with a few cliches. I wasn't impressed. But that's all part of the plan; I'm glad I didn't give up.

The conceit of the story, recursion, is investigated completely and exhaustively to the point where you are completely exhausted and thrilled. Beautiful ending (It shouldn't be an epilogue though! Too necessary.).

Once the protagonist (a cybernetic enhanced human) gets moved out of her comfort, she's getting pushed around for the rest of the novel. It's action sci-fi.

An olfactory fairy tale

4 žvaigždutės

A fairy tale or a myth with deep, evocative scenes through scent. If 'Perfume: The Story of a Murderer' is too intense, the dark base note in this tale is balanced by hopeful and bright top notes.
